Zenith DTT901 Digital TV Tuner Converter

Time is ticking away until the digital television transition hits.  Hopefully, you’ve already begun to prepare your household for the transition.  If you haven’t prepared, on February 17 2009, your TVs may go blank.  If you’re not ready, how do you expect to buy designer clothes from QVC or HSN?  Our tips and articles can help you get prepared so this doesn’t happen to you.  You should feel free to browse our reviews of digital TV converters to find the best  digital converter box for you.

Today we are reviewing the  Zenith DTT901 digital tv tuner converter box.  This is a great unit; that continues to receive accolades from numerous sources.  It even landed a recommendation from Consumer Reports.  It even includes an analog pass-trough if you still need analog stations before the transition is complete.  This is a feature that was lacking in the Zenith DTT900, which this unit replaces.  The model is somtimes  specified as the Zenith DT901, but it actually the DTT901.

Zenith DTT901 (DT901) Picture Quality
The Zenith DTT901 digital converter box is on the top of the heap when is comes to picture quality. The picture quality of this digital converter box is better than most all other DTV converter boxes on the market. When using this digital TV converter box you will get a picture that is just as good as DVD quality.  It’s quality is on par with the Sansonic FT300A, the Philco TB100HH9, and the Channel Master CM7000 which were the other units that came out on top in the Consumer Reports tests.

Zenith DTT901 Audio Quality
The Zenith DTT901 delivers very high quality audio from its RF (coax) and composite outputs.  It is on par with the other top units in our tests such as the AccessHD DTA1080D and the Tivax STB-T8 . This digital converter box delivers crystal clear sound that is much better than what you would get from any analog broadcast.

Zenith DTT901 (DT901) Features
One of the greatest features of the DTT901 is the analog pass-through, which allows your TV’s RF input to tune to off-air analog channels when the box is in standby. The program guide presents program title and run-time info for the current and next show on all available channels, with a show description available for the currently tuned program on the info bar.

It also covers the basic aspect ratio settings and has a Set by Program option that automatically adjusts the aspect ratio depending on whether the digital signals are standard-def or high-def (which an analog TV would display as standard-def). The DTT901 also allows you to directly tune to a new digital channel without having to do a scan-for-all-channels. This is a huge time saver when adding new channels and is a great feature.  And if no signal is found on a particular channel, the on-screen signal meter allows you to monitor its strength as you optimize the antenna position. So if you know a channel exists, you can tune to it and adjust your antenna until the signal is strong enough for the box to tune it in.

The included universal remote can turn your analog TV on and off. As with many other units, the Zenith DTT901 allows you to adjust the font, size, color, and transparency of the closed-caption text and its background in order to make it more or less visible. It includes high quality A/V cables (composite-video and stereo audio) in addition to the usual RF cables. The DTT901 is also Energy Star compliant.

The Zenith DTT901 (Zenith DT901) currently retails for around $60 and is in stock at many retailers now.
